2023 Convention Model Contest – Brady Rhodenizer

The Maritime Federation of Model Railroaders held it’s annual model and photo contest. In conjunction with the annual convention held this year in Saint John, New Brunswick.

The model contest being two classes with eight categories. In three of the regular class categories we had three or more entries. So the first place winners will be moving up to Craftsman: Gerald McCoy in passenger; Luc Nowlan in freight; and Louis McIntyre in structures.

The winner of the Lou Simard Award was Thomas Savage who only joined the MFMR at the show in Amherst this spring. It is good to see new young modelers, and encourage them.

During the peer judging I noticed how some got down on their knees and even turned on their flash lights to get a better view. There were some hard decisions to make as to which one to vote for as the workmanship was so good on many of the models.

Putting the contest together is a team effort:

  • Marc Hemphill did a lot of prep work ahead of the show, and helped with putting the presentation together.
  • Peter Mesheau had some signs made up. Which we will be keeping for future shows.
  • Brent Norton, Taylor Main, Luc Nowlan all helped with contest registration, setting up the entries for viewing, and counting of the ballets.
  • Ric Hamilton took photos of the entries, and put together the slide show presentation.

Our contest was down some what this year as we haven’t fully recovered from the pandemic. There were 57 models and photos entered. However there were some terrific models and photos entered.

With the convention and contest over with for 2023. It is time to start working on models for next years model contest.
